LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

The term globalization has become a widely used catchphrase but may mean very different things in different settings. While some greet processes of globalization with hopes for economic success, others maintain a certain sense of skepticism or even fear in the face of fast and radical changes. While both or neither may apply completely, the social and economic challenges posed by the phenomenon of globalization need to be reflected in educational settings by investigating the hierarchies and power asymmetries in the global economic system that divide rather than unite humanity and cause serious social and political injustice on a global scale. In spite of the considerable impact of globalization, the concept of citizenship has so far continued to be tied to nation states. As such, it is often defined as a legal status that entails a set of rights and duties and a feeling of belonging to a particular community. Although individuals cannot actually obtain the legal status of global citizen to date, the notion of cosmopolitan or global citizenship seeks to extend these three features to apply to a global rather than national community. The utopian element of global citizenship thus entails that every human individual is already a global citizen with varying degrees of awareness and very different degrees of agency and that all global citizens democratically participate in order to shape a sustainable and peaceful future for the global community.
