This course aims to put contemporary manifestations of feminist activism with which you maybe familiar, such as #MeToo, into broader historical, geopolitical andtheoretical context. It will provide a critical, situatedintroduction to the complex anddiverse feminist movement as it has developed over time and space, and explorethe relationship of feminist theory and activism to broader social movementstruggles and to the theorisation of social movements as a political form.

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

·        Identify both the continuities andchanges between current and past feminist struggles;

·        Demonstrate an understanding of howfeminism has developed as a social movement: in diverse ways in differentcontexts; out of other movements; and at the transnational level;

·        Assess feminist contributions tosocial movement theory and practice more broadly;

·        Situate and explain instances ofresistance to #MeToo and other contemporary feminist campaigns.

Inhalt/e

The last few years has seen a surge of popular and high-profilefeminist mobilisations, from the ‘Black Protests’ against banning abortion inPoland to the Women’s March against US President Donald Trump, and from the viral#MeToo campaign against sexual harassment and assault to the spread of the Chileananthem ‘A Rapist in your Path’. This course helps to make sense of such phenomena- their dynamics, their limitations and their potential - by contextualisingthem as the most recent manifestations of a much longer and more far-reachingsocial movement struggle. We begin by thinking about and documenting feminismas a social movement, paying particular attention to how we conceptualise its historicaldynamics over time, its spread around the world, and the development oftransnational feminist connections. We will then interrogate the sometimessymbiotic, sometimes conflictual relationship of feminism to a range of othersocial movements, past and present, before considering the ways in whichfeminism has responded to some of the challenges facing contemporary strugglesfor progressive change, including a resurgent right-wing backlash. The course is taught in two blocks, over two separate weeks, and the topicsare likely to be as follows, with some possible refinements nearer the time ofdelivery:

First block: #MeToo in a broader feminist context

1.       Theorising feminism as a social movement

2.      Contemporary feminist mobilisations

3.      Feminism over time: movement ‘waves’

4.      Feminism in a global frame: nationaland regional diversity

5.       Transnational feminist organizing: the UN Decade, Beijing and beyond

Second block: Feminism in a broader movement context

6.       Feminist theorisations of social movements as gendered phenomena

7.      Feminist roots in other movements: abolition,anticolonialism, civil rights

8.      Feminist interventions in othermovements: the global justice movement and #Occupy

9.       Feminism and current movement dynamics: institutionalization,neoliberalism and hashtags

10.     Against feminism: Counter-mobilisation, from anti-suffragismto #HimToo
