LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

Students should be able to engage in debate and discussions of art philosophy and formulate their thoughts in English

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

The course will be workshop based, with short lectures followed by group work.

Inhalt/e

The course will allow students to practice and deepen their knowledge of both spoken and written English in the context of the philosophy of art and art critique. The first part of the course will include a brief look at various texts that provide a practical, theoretical, and critical framework for contemporary art production; from books, catalogues, journals, and artists' statements to press releases and advertisements.  These sources will offer a base for approaching questions such as: What is art, that is, what activities or objects are defined as art? How/where do these definitional processes occur? What distinguishes art appreciation from art critique and the philosophy of art; and how does art differ from the thinking and writing about art?

After a brief review of vocabulary and advanced grammar, students will be introduced to English style guides, working with translators and editors, and the stages involved in the submission and publication of texts.

The second part of the course will focus on art's role within society. Following a discussion of concepts from the white cube to "political timing specificity" (a term coined by the Cuban artist Tania Bruguera), students will explore a specific, virulent issue in contemporary Carinthian (or Austrian) art and develop a project that involves debate of this issue. The specific issue could, for example, be found at the intersection of art and public space, the environment, or politics, or might also have to do with self- or externally imposed categorizations of art, among other possibilities. The form of the project and the particular issue will be decided upon and shaped through group exercises and discussion.
