Intended learning outcomes
The “Introduction to Business” module is meant to provide students with the basic concepts and terminology required to connect effectively the subjects imparted throughout the Bachelor Programme in International Business and Economics, and in particular in Pflichtfach No. 1 “Principles of Business”.
Teaching methodology including the use of eLearning tools
The module will mix lectures with class discussions and role-plays.
Course content
Session 1 - What do we mean by “business”? What do we mean by “management”? How does management relate to “administration”, “leadership”, “organization” and “entrepreneurship”?

Session 2 - Understanding organizational levels: functional management, business-level management, corporate-level management, network management. “St. John’s Hospital” role-play.

Session 3 - Operating core, strategic apex, middle management, techno-structure and support staff. Basic corporate functions and their interplay.

Examination information
Examination methodology
Summative evaluation of learning is going to take place through a 60-minutes online multiple choice exam.
Examination topic(s)
Both the content of the lectures and the literature.
Assessment criteria / Standards of assessment for examinations
The exam consists of ten multiple choice questions with four true/false answers each, with any outcome from “all false”, “one false / three true” etc. to “all true” being possible. One point is awarded for each correct answer, with a maximum of forty points therefore possible; 70% of answers (twenty-eight points) have to be correct to pass.
The dates for the final exam and resits are 08.11.2019 / 29.11.2019 / 10.01.2020.
