LV-Beschreibung

Intendierte Lernergebnisse

At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • describe significant successes and failures in script/language decipherment;
  • identify key requirements for script/language decipherment;
  • explain the main steps needed to decipher a script/language;
  • demonstrate how to undertake script/language decipherment (case studies);
  • analyze the process of (un)successful script/language decipherment; and
  • devise a plan to decipher an undeciphered script/language.

Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools

Short instructor inputs and case study example; student-led case studies (similar to presentations)

Inhalt/e

In this course the following topics will be discussed:

  • Introduction to scripts (alphabets, abjads, abugidas, et al.)
  • History of script/language decipherment (study of major breakthroughs in script/language decipherment)
  • The physical objects where scripts are found (including but not limited to the Rosetta Stone, the Phaistos disc, the Codex Vindobonensis)
  • Case studies of script/language decipherment (including but not limited to Egyptian hieroglyphs, Linear B, Maya)
  • Case studies of undeciphered scripts and languages (including but not limited to Rongorongo, the symbols on the Phaistos disc, Etruscan)

No previous knowledge of the scripts/languages to be discussed in the course is expected. Students will be provided with the necessary information to address the decipherment issues raised in class. Case studies will be used to provide concrete examples of script/language decipherment, thus allowing students to engage in this process first-hand.

Literatur

All materials will be made available on Moodle and as a reader for purchase through the ÖH printing services.

Prüfungsinformationen

Im Fall von online durchgeführten Prüfungen sind die Standards zu beachten, die die technischen Geräte der Studierenden erfüllen müssen, um an diesen Prüfungen teilnehmen zu können.

Prüfungsmethode/n

Students will be asked to complete the following assignments:

  • SHORT ESSAY (600 - 800 words) on a question related to script/language decipherment provided by the instructor. This essay will serve as a starting-off point for the instructor to gauge the student’s language ability and mastery of the course content covered so far. Students will be expected to produce a coherent, cohesive academic essay with appropriate citations in Chicago (author-date).

  • TERM PAPER (4,000 - 5,000 words) on a topic related to script/language decipherment chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor. The term paper will serve as evidence of the student having mastered a particular topic related to script/language decipherment. This detailed, narrowly defined analysis will consider one issue related to script/language decipherment and should be approved by the instructor.

  • CASE STUDY (Number of studies and details to be agreed upon in class) on a particular script/language decipherment question chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor. The case study will allow the student to engage peers and the instructor in a detailed analysis of the issue in question. A sample case study will be done by the instructor to exemplify how the case study should be conducted. Students will need to choose a particular language/script and provide sufficient material for the class to discuss how to engage in the process of decipherment.
