Inhalt/e

In this course we will go on a reading journey through some best-selling American fiction of the twentieth century: We will take off with The Great Gatsby (1925) by F. Scott Fitzgerald, a classic about the illusions of the American Dream. Our next stop will be J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951), a novel that deals with issues of the “disaffected youth” and their search for identity. Once heavily criticized for its profanity and banned in schools for decades, the book today is required reading for students in the U.S. Our literary journey will then lead us to Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1960), another coming of age story, but one that brings issues of racial prejudice and injustice in a sleepy Southern town to the center of America’s consciousness. Our final destination will be The Bluest Eye (1970), the tragic tale of a young Black girl longing for beauty, and the first novel by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison.

Lehrziel

Students will get an in-depth understanding of selected works of twentieth century best-selling American fiction, will discuss the literary texts and their respective authors, and learn about the historical contexts and what made those novels bestsellers. In addition to the four novels on the reading list, students will acquaint themselves with texts on critical theory, which will help them to analyze literary texts based on a variety of approaches. By the end of the semester, students should be able to identify themes and concerns of the novels on the reading list, as well as have learned to express a critical voice in literature studies.
