(translation): Between Identification and Alienation: Coping with the Holocaust in Post-Yugoslav Literatures

Official Yugoslav politics of memory about World War II tended to be monolithic, focussing on the Liberation War while passing over NS-persecutions, esp. of Jews. The disintegration of Yugoslavia contributed to the development not only of an anxiety about, but also a pluralism of memory. This paper explores the representation of the Holocaust in five works of Post-Yugoslav second-generation Holocaust literature with a particular focus on their narrative structures. Each text employs a different concept of literary memory: Albahari’s poetics of repetition through experimental circularity, David’s poetics of multiperspectivity within a visionary realism, Drdnić’s poetics of accumulation through documentarism, Domaš' poetics of restitution through corporal writing, and Karahasan' poetics of incomprehension through chiasmatic continuity.
