Protest Tech: Media Practices as Radical Heritage Performance

As part of a series of events on 1968 and its legacies in May-June 2018, the workshop "Social movements and their technologies" explored the imbrication between social movements and communication technologies, tracing the lines of continuity and discontinuity between the movements of 1968 and recent social movements. The presentation argued that "print is not dead" as a protest medium in the digital age. Using examples from the UK and Europe, it demonstrated that printed protest media and the technologies involved have a function beyond the immediate protest situation. Protest print has the ability to transmit radical heritages through technological, visual and performative practices.
