Relating to mathematics and revisiting identity research: From belief...

In this lecture and workshop, we will focus on how to conceptualise our and others' relation to mathematics both theoretically and empirically. We will shortly look into beliefs research and discuss its pros and weaknesses before we look more closely into the diverse paths for identity research with a special focus on understanding identity as a material and discursive phenomenon that allows the move toward hybridity and difference. For the workshop, participants are asked to bring an A3 page poster that describes their research project and some indicative research materials in the type of data collection (classroom episode, activity interaction, interview, data from curriculum texts or other policy documents where specific identity markers are noted or even media-based descriptions that highlight diverse types of mathematical identities i.e. talents, best students or other categories). These can be either part of PhD students' corpus of empirical material or material-discursive artifacts they identify in media or curricular texts. In addition, participants will be asked to read the provided literature (see attached papers)  to highlight themes and models for the analytical process.
