Titel: Making Robert Musil’s "The Man without Qualities" Move: How to Effectuate an Interdiscursive Mobile Edition Online
Beschreibung:

As Michel Butor noted with respect to Balzac, the latter’s Comédie Humaine represents a “mobile novel”, “a whole consisting of a certain number of parts which we may realize in almost any sequence we choose”. By lack of an integrative principle in modernity, i.e. a nondiscursive reality functioning as an intersubjective point of reference, “the novel shows the disruption of the interrelatedness and relatability of the perspectival aspects” - which “for instance, came to perfection in Robert Musil’s novel The Man without Qualities,” in which “the epic perspectivism explodes, as it were, and founders on its own consequence of exact description” (Hans Blumenberg). Thus the “increase in the exactness of the narration leads to a description of the impossibility of narration as such” (ibid).

This diagnosis is put to the test by taking a close look at the interdiscursive formations that Musil’s estate, having meanwhile been made accessible by editorial philology and published digitally, allows us to see. They are particularly in the focus of the related research project MUSIL ONLINE – Interdiscursive Commentary: its double aim is to both represent the pertinent data on the basis of XML-TEI and mediate the same by way of an online presentation, thus trying to track the very integration principle that is supposedly missing by a formal, or more precisely: an information-technological approach.

In the presentation, it will be shown how the negative judgment according to which the novel depicts the impossibility of narration, as it has to be pronounced from a critical standpoint before the event of discourse theory, may be revised by taking the latter into account and enhancing it, as it were, by the employment of digital technologies in the context of an online edition, resulting in a turn to the positive side insofar as contributes to yielding the user an affirmative experience with the text of the novel, and thus gaining a possibility of reading. The interdiscursive commentary, while far from holding the reins (as used to be the case with traditional commentaries in printed historical-critical editions), does pull the invisible strings which afford the mobile novel its very incessant mobility both as a whole and in its different parts that depends on unforeseeable draughts, which MUSIL will have had in mind when he asked to be read twice – “in part and in total".
