Titel: Writing requirements students have to fulfil in their professional lives
Beschreibung: The Austrian writing centre of the Alpen-Adria-University of Klagenfurt, conducted a broad study aiming to develop a deeper understanding of writing requirements at different workplaces. Data were collected in 56 interviews with heads (e.g. chief executive officers or presidents) of different corporations/public institutions concerning 5455 employees with a university degree. Apart from the collection of data, the study served the purpose of promoting the writing centre and its educational interests within the region. To further the collection of relevant data from the guided interviews, the interviewee came from various professional fields, such as industry, tourism, the media, finance, insurance companies or public services. They listed the most common and widespread text types of their occupations (texts which serve internal and external communication at work, see e.g. Weder 2010). Additionally, the field interviewer inquired into the general relevance of writing for the office culture and revealed expectations and experiences regarding writing skills of graduates. The results now are considered a base for shaping modules for different types of studies which are relevant for the students’ careers in the future.
