Titel: “Let’s talk about sex…ism!” How gender stereotyped attitudes and discriminative behaviour hinder women engineers’ careers
Beschreibung: The image of engineers is sometimes far away from engineers’ job realities. Engineers’ self-descriptions portray the demands of modern engineering, while non-engineers stick to old-fashioned stereotyped images of the engineering profession. Additional to those general image differences, the ascribed attributes of women and men engineers differ even more. And those differences reproduce gender stereotypes which lead to a contradiction of women engineers’ images and the image of how a “real, competent engineer” should be like. These gender stereotyped images are just one piece of a whole puzzle of hindering attitudes and behaviour patterns, which culminate in sexism towards women engineers in their working life. But, “thanks to political correctness”, sexist statements are nowadays mostly wrapped in compliments. And those compliments go together with old-fashioned gender-roles and gender-stereotypes. That is why it is so important to understand the mechanisms of gender-stereotypes, to eliminate the ground for sexist and discriminative behaviour towards women engineers, which still hinders them in their careers.
