Titel: The computer as a medium for Peircean diagrams
Beschreibung: There are various developments in modern mathematics and mathematics education where a central role is attributed to the manifold mathematical signs, diagrams, symbols, notations, inscriptions or graphs. This role concerns all kinds of mathematical activities like learning, research and applications of mathematics. Among those phenomena are: experimental mathematics, using the semiotics of Peirce in didactics of mathematics ( especially the notion of diagrammatic reasoning ), investigation of processes of mathematization and modelling through symbolization and diagrammatization, also in the classroom. In the presentation the general context will be described with a focus on the concept of diagram according to Peirce. This will be explained by examples and the relevance for computer use in mathematics learning and teaching will be discussed: the computer on the one hand is a medium for the implementation of diagrammatic reasoning, and on the other hand it accentuates the role of the latter for all mathematical activities.
