The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva Switzerland is one of the most complex experimental set ups, and is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator, ever constructed. The LHC consists of a 27km ring with four detectors located at four collision points. Each detector is run independently by an experimental collaboration: ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb (requiring over 3000 members in ATLAS and CMS, and over 700 members in ALICE and LHCb). Many diverse measurements have been completed, are currently being attempted, and have been planned for the next two decades. This symposium will explore the complexity of the measurements attempted by the experimental collaborations at the LHC and the epistemic roles of computer simulations and machine learning.
