Titel: How applications of statistics enrich statistics education
Beschreibung:

The potential of applications to enrich statistics education will be the focus of this session. Especially the approach of cases studies seems very suitable to show the multifarious challenges to the students, and to reveal the opportunities and difficulties of modelling and applying the abstract methods.

We want to refer to the grand old R.A. Fisher whose driving force in developing new statistical methods always has been his problems from applications:

“The tendency of modern scientific teaching is to neglect the great books, to lay far too much stress upon relatively unimportant modern work, and to present masses of detail of doubtful truth and questionable weight in such a way as to obscure principles."

“To call in the statistician after the experiment is done may be no more than asking him to perform a post-mortem examination: he may be able to say what the experiment died of."
