Title: Einsatz von Geographischen Informationssystemen in der Biodiversitätsforschung: eine räumlich explizite Abschätzung des Vogelartenreichtums der Neotropen
Description: In diesem Workshop wurde methodisch erarbeitet, wie man auf Grundlage von Informationen aus verschiedenen Datenquellen eine räumlich explizite Abschätzung von Biodiversität auf kontinentalem Skalenniveau mit Hilfe eines GIS herstellen kann. Ziel war die Darstellung des Artenreichtums an Brutvögeln für Süd- und Mittelamerika, um in weiterer Folge geeignete Ausgangsdaten für weitere Analysen zu generieren. Ausgehend von Informationen über Habitatansprüche von neotropischen Brutvogelarten, die mit aktuellen Landbedeckungskarten verknüpft wurden, wurden bestehenden Arealkarten dieser Vogelarten auf Flächen reduziert, die ein Potenzial für geeignete Habitate aufweisen; Gebiete ohne geeignete Habitate wurden als Areal exkludiert. Eine finale Überlagerung aller überarbeiteten Areale ermöglichte eine neue und verbesserte Widergabe der Verbreitung der neotropischen Avifauna.

Title: Geographic Information Systems in biodiversity research: a spatially explicit estimation of avian species richness in the Neotropics
Description: In this workshop we developed a procedure to derive a spatially explicite estimate of biodiversity on a continental scale using a Geographic Information System. The goal was a map of avian species richness for Central- and South-America, which can be used as a basis for further analysis in the long run. We started with information providing habitat preferences for all Neotropical bird species and linked this information with current land cover maps. This combined knowledge was used to refine existing areal maps of these bird species, excluding areas with no suitable habitat. An final overlay of all refined maps resulted in a new and better spatial description of the neotropical avifauna.
