Title: | Geographic Information Systems in biodiversity research: a spatially explicit estimation of avian species richness in the Neotropics |
Description: | In this workshop we developed a procedure to derive a spatially explicite estimate of biodiversity on a continental scale using a Geographic Information System. The goal was a map of avian species richness for Central- and South-America, which can be used as a basis for further analysis in the long run. We started with information providing habitat preferences for all Neotropical bird species and linked this information with current land cover maps. This combined knowledge was used to refine existing areal maps of these bird species, excluding areas with no suitable habitat. An final overlay of all refined maps resulted in a new and better spatial description of the neotropical avifauna. |
