Kurzfassung: | Giving constructive and supportive text feedback that has an immediate positive effect on students’ writing skills is a challenging task for writing instructors. Although it is an essential part of the writing process, researchers have largely ignored the effect of written text feedback on students' editing behaviour so far. The relationships between directive and non-directive text feedback types as well as high level and low level error types have also been neglected, particularly in the feedback practices of professional writing tutors. Thus, the aim of this pilot study is to examine how error and feedback type influence the revision process of undergraduate writers. Errors which gave rise to feedback were described in terms of the Scope–Substance taxonomy (Sigott, Cesnik and Dobric 2016). In this study, the focus was merely on error substance, i.e. the units of text that need to be modified, namely, text, paragraph, sentence, or word. For the purpose of this study, non-invasive text feedback was provided for eight essays, which were produced in an English L2 writing class. Directive and non-directive feedback - differentiated by either providing or not providing students with suggestions for improvement was distributed to an approximately equal extent. The revised texts were compared to the draft versions in order to analyse the reactions to the feedback instances. The quantitative analysis of the feedback instances (n=90) has shown that written text feedback is generally highly effective and that non-directive feedback leads to a more positive effect, particularly as far as lower level errors (sentence or word) are concerned. The reasons for non-responses to feedback cannot be attributed to feedback type or error substance, which shows a distinct need for further qualitative analysis. |
