Among themany ways of achieving denotative, connotative, pragmatic, and aestheticequivalences when translating proverbs, one can be to observe their conceptualstructure, where applicable. Identification of the mapping domain(s) inproverbs conceptualized and lexicalized as metaphors or metonymies can lead ustowards the discovery or construction of most natural equivalences. The firstpart of the paper outlines the cognitive translation hypothesis (Mandelblit1995; Al-Hasnawi 2007; Dobrić 2011) and its use in translating metaphors andmetonymies in general. The second part exemplifies the application of the modelto proverbs translated from English into Serbian. It is shown that the model isuseful in achieving high levels of natural equivalence.
