Titel: Implementation as interaction of research, practice, and policy
Untertitel: Considerations from the Austrian initiative IMST

This paper starts with reflections on the notions implementation, innovation, and intervention, working out that all these processes are initiated when changes or improvements are intended by important stakeholders. Four examples from mathematics education research and development contexts are sketched in or to demonstrate the manifold contexts and challenges of implementation. After reflecting strengths and weaknesses of the two contrasting approaches “technical rationality” and “reflective rationality”, “societal rationality” is introduced as a third approach. This approach aims at interconnecting the views of (educational) research, practice, and policy (including steering-relevant administration). Based on that, selected activities and results of the Austrian initiative IMST are presented, discussing the interplay of research, practice, and policy. It is assumed that an adequate balance between the interests of these communities is essential for successful implementation and sustainability.
