Advanced Ultra High Definition Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (AdvUHD-DASH)
Description:

The main objective of the AdvUHD-DASH project is to research and develop a Future Media Internet ready adaptive media streaming ecosystem.

Multimedia is pervasive nowadays as we consume it every day in various contexts. Also multimedia is the main content type in todays' Internet according to predictions, mainly delivered over the top existing infrastructures. The infrastructure is constantly improving including better means for content distribution and new Internet access technologies are reaching our households such as fibre and 4G. Display sizes are becoming better and bigger including 4K Ultra High-Definition and end user devices are becoming more and more powerful. Current adaptive media streaming systems are designed for at most high definition such as 1080p, while standard YouTube delivery is preconfigured for 360/480p. However, the subjective quality experienced by the end consumer is also determined by start-up delay and smooth playback, whereby adaptation decisions are mainly reactive (rather than proactive) and ad-hoc which often leads to playback interruptions (referred to as stalls) leading to re-buffering and user drop out.

The exptected outcome of the AdvUHD-DASH project is as follows:

  • End-to-end scalable architecture for Future Media Internet ready adaptive media streaming ecosystem.
  • Scalable, real-time content generation for advanced ultra HD content within the cloud.
  • Efficient means for content distribution and delivery by optimally utilizing multiple CDNs including theirs APIs.
  • Incremental deployment options for advanced transport and adaptation protocols.
  • Platform-independent DASH client implementation framework with enhanced QoE options.
