Critical Mathematics Education in the classroom - Investigating effects of in-school teacher training on different scholastic levels

Mathematics plays a vital role in describing, modeling, and solving global and local societal challenges, and sometimes its application can even be part of the problems we face. Under these circumstances, it seems essential to teach mathematics with the responsibility to address these issues in class. Critical mathematics education includes not only the teaching of mathematical rules and procedures but also socially relevant contexts that should enable students to connect their mathematical knowledge with the social, economic, or political structures they are surrounded by and to reflect them critically (with mathematical tools). Including such approaches in mathematics education offers students discourses that promote non-mathematical skills that they need for active participation in a democratic society and on which they can also base their individual attributions of relevance – students can deepen their knowledge of both math and their social reality. The project aims to investigate to what extent aspects of critical mathematics education can be implemented in everyday teaching practice in a European context and what effects and obstacles arise at both teacher and student level. The focus will be on one aspect that has received little attention so far, namely the practical realization by various teachers (who may not have been in contact with this approach before) in everyday teaching.
