Research Network for the History of European Periodicals (R-NHEP)
Description:

The Research Network for the History of European Periodicals is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of periodicals and newspapers published in Italy and Europe from the 18th century to the present day and aims to stimulate research on European journalism from a literary, historical and linguistic perspective at an international level, involving multiple fields (erudite, encyclopaedic, spectator-type, popular etc.).

The research group is dedicated to the promotion and dissemination of studies on European periodicals in various fields, including:

  • the study of the discursive traditions that have characterised journalism since the 18th century (journalistic prototypes, genres and styles; formats of criticism and public debate, such as the polemic and the querelle);
  • the role of translations and translators in the development of European journalism (historical translation studies and historical translator studies);
  • the functions played by the letter both within periodicals and in the evolution and diversification of newspapers themselves (the use of the letter in periodicals; epistolary and periodicals as ‘analogue social networks’).
