Late Medieval Ars memorativa treatises from Central Europe in Social, Cultural, and Historical Contexts
Beschreibung: The two major universities of late medieval East Central Europe, Vienna and Cracow, acted as intermediaries in transmitting knowledge to students eager to participate in the contemporary widening of scholarly horizons. The cultural importance of the University of Vienna in expanding the borders of late medieval learning (both in scientific and geographical terms) cannot be overestimated. My research aims at examining a peculiar facet of this impact: the popularization of treatises on the art of memory in East Central Europe. Ars memorativa is a specific ancient technique of memory management which became strikingly popular throughout late medieval and early modern Europe (c.1400’s-1520’s). Although the number of editions of art of memory tracts is increasing, art of memory treatises originating from Central Europe and the contexts of their origin and reception have thus far remained neglected. Many of these treatises took a new form with every new copy made, and the Benedictine monasteries of Austria and the University of Vienna were especially important centers in disseminating this technique. The basic goal of this project is therefore to examine the paths of cultural dissemination by a thorough examination of the manuscript heritage and by providing critical editions of these hitherto unexplored texts. The analysis will present those foreign and native teachers of ars memorativa who gave lectures on the art of memory in Cracow in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, and discuss the presence of the foreign treatises on the art in Poland. It will explore the environment of the Polish Observants, who authored a number of the treatises. It will also address another unexplored issue, namely the environments of the readers. The provenances of manuscripts and books will be investigated to demonstrate the complexities involved in disseminating the art of memory. The teaching of the art will be shown against the background of the reception of a scholastic educational tradition at a late medieval university, and within a religious order. New features of the art manifestly traveled not only from Italy to the North, but also from the West to the East, and from the East to the West. Even so, the exact nature and contexts of this late medieval intellectual exchange remains to be explored. It is especially in this respect that the cooperation with the fellowship co-applicant, Prof. Sabine Seelbach who intends to continue her research by concentrating on the same treatises from a different region, is vital to the project. The proposed project is a case study that promises to make a substantial contribution to late medieval intellectual history in general and the place of Vienna and Cracow in it. It is based on the close cooperation of two researchers of the same topic, such as strong cooperation with other important researchers from the Central Europe – Dr. Lucie Doležalová (Charles University, Prague) and Farkas Gábor Kiss (ELTE University, Budapest) – each focusing on a different geographic area. Thus, it will offer a fuller treatment of the topic, negotiated results, and an essential comparative perspective.
