EU Resource Policy: AREIT - Assessment of resource efficiency indicators and targets
Description: Natürliche Ressourcen sind essentiell für die Wirtschaft und unseren Wohlstand. Sie liefert uns Rohstoffe, Energie, Nahrungsmittel, Wasser und Land, sowie umweltbezogene und soziale Dienstleistungen. Bevölkerungswachstum und wirtschaftliches Wachstum haben die Nutzung von natürlichen Ressourcen dramatisch erhöht. Alle Trends zeigen, dass der Planet unsere derzeitigen Konsum- und Produktionsmuster langfristig nicht tragen kann. Im Sinne einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung müssen wir daher unsere Ressourceneffizienz steigern. Dazu benötigen wir Indikatoren und Ziele, durch die wir unsere Fortschritte nachverfolgen und anleiten können. Das Ziel dieser Studie ist es, existierende Indikatoren zu Ressourcenverbrauch und Ressourceneffizienz zu identifizieren und zu bewerten, sowie die Möglichkeit zu evaluieren, geeignete Ziele festzusetzen. Schließlich zielt das Projekt darauf ab, Empfehlungen für die Implementierung der Indikatoren und Ziele in der EU zu präsentieren. Die Studie wird existierende Indikatoren zu Ressourcenverbrauch und Ressourceneffizienz in den EU-27 und sechs weiteren nicht EU-Staaten analysieren, und deren konkrete Umsetzung prüfen. Eine erste Abschätzung der wirtschaftlichen, sozialen und ökologischen Folgen dieser Ziele werden die entwickelten Zielsetzungen ergänzen.

Description: Natural resources are fundamental for the economy and our prosperity. They provide raw materials, energy, food, water and land, as well as environmental and social services. Population and economic growth has increased the use of natural resources dramatically. All trends show that the planet will not be able to sustain our current patterns of production and consumption. In order to move towards sustainable development, we must become more resource efficient. To do this there is a need for indicators and targets to track and guide our progress. The objective of this study is to identify and assess existing resource use and resource efficiency indicators and to evaluate the possibility of setting corresponding targets. Ultimately, it aims to present recommendations for the implementation of indicators and targets in the EU policy context. This study will look into the existing indicators and targets for resource use and resource efficiency across the EU-27 as well as in six non-EU countries, and will investigate their concrete implementation. A preliminary assessment of the economic, social and environmental impacts of these targets will complement the targets proposed.
