SUME - Sustainable Urban Metabolism - ist ein EU FP7 Projekt das vom OIR (Österreichisches Institut für Raumplanung) koordiniert wird und in dem das Institut für Soziale Ökologie für die Komponente urbaner Stoffwechsel verantwortlich ist. Unter urbanem Stoffwechsel versteht man die Gesamtheit der Material und Energieflüsse, die von urbanen Regionen aufgenommen werden und diese (als Abfälle und Emissionen) wieder verlassen und von denen Städte funktional abhängen. Stadtplanungsentscheidungen können die Nachfrage nach Ressourcen und die Entstehung von Abfall und Emissionen langfristig beeinflussen und haben somit bedeutende Implikationen für den urbanen Stoffwechsel. Dennoch werden sozial-metabolische Aspekte kaum in der Stadtplanung berücksichtigt. Das Ziel des Projekts SUME ist es Vorschläge zu entwickeln wie metabolische Aspekte in der Stadtplanung berücksichtigt werden sollten um den Ressourcenverbrauch von Städten nachhaltiger zu gestalten.

SUME - Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe
Description:

SUME - Sustainable Urban Metabolism - is an EU FP7 project coordinated by ÖIR (Österreichisches Institut für Raumplanung), where the Institute of Social Ecology is responsible for the urban metabolism component. Urban metabolism is the study of the flows of material, energy, emissions, nutrients and wastes which enter and exit urban boundaries, and upon which the functions of the cities depend. Urban planning choices have metabolism implications: far reaching consequences in terms of resource use and waste generation. However, metabolism concepts are almost never used to guide urban planning. The principal goal of the SUME research project is the linking of urban metabolism and urban planning, in order to orient urban form towards more sustainable resource use levels.
