IMEA: Umweltstatistik importierter Güter und Dienstleistungen
Beschreibung: Das IMEA Team unseres Instituts wird an einem einjährigen Projekt teilnehmen, in dem Methoden in Richtung der Umweltstatistik in der EU ausgewertet werden. Das IMEA Projekt wurde als SKEP ERA-NET aus dem 6. EU Rahmenprogramm beauftragt. Wir sind verantwortlich für ein Workpackage zu ökologischem Fußabdruck, mit Schwerpunkt auf Land und Wassernutzung. Unsere Partner in diesem Projekt sind die Ecole des Mines (ARMINES) in Frankreich, die Koordinatoren TNO in den Niederlanden, VITO in Belgien und die Universität OULO in Finnland.

IMEA - Imports Envrionmental Accounting: Environmental accounting of imported goods and services: towards an integrated research
Beschreibung: Sustainable Consumption and Production are essential requirements for a Sustainable Development as recognized by the Heads of State and Governments in the Johannesburg Declaration. In the current globalization era, this goal of sustainable development implies a special consideration for trade and trans-boundary issues. Currently, there is however a lack of consensus among EU countries regarding the most promising approach towards assessing the environmental impacts of EU imported goods and services. The IMEA project aims to provide a comprehensive review of the most important environmental accounting methodologies (comprehensiveness, data availability and applicability) which may be applied to EU imports. Most of these approaches have been developed in European country contexts: their adaptation to an international trade context is a significant research and accounting challenge. This project will identify the most promising directions and propose concrete next steps in terms of data gathering and applications. The goal of IMEA is to concentrate the expertise of researchers from different areas of environmental accounting in order to fully examine the most promising approaches for assessing the environmental consequences of EU imports. This will be done through four intermediary objectives: (1) Review the existing integrated frameworks for assessing the environmental burden of goods and how to complement them to consider imports from non-EU countries (including developing countries), accounting both for location- and goods- specific issues. (2) Assess the comprehensiveness, applicability and data requirements of each accounting approach both in an overall perspective and regarding import-specific issues. (3) Provide a conceptual framework, and discuss it during a workshop with funding agencies, for assessing the environmental burden of European imports worldwide and rate the potential contribution of each accounting approach for reporting on global warming, impacts on human-health and ecosystems, mineral resources, land and water use. (4) Propose guidelines for concrete applications of environmental accounting to European imports and pathways for further development.
