Contribution to the Sustainable Indigenous Futures (SIF) Fund
Description: The Sustainable Indigenous Futures (SIF) Fund is one of the initiatives in Austria that came about in response to the tsunami of December 26, 2004. The IFF-Social Ecology was one of the co-founders / donors to the SIF Fund, together with the Universal Music Company (proceedings of the sale from André Heller’s music CD Austria for Asia) and Caritas Austria. The primary goal of this fund is to support the self-rehabilitation efforts of the indigenous people of the Nicobar Islands, a region that was highly affected by the catastrophe by virtue of their being close to northern Sumatra. Living along the coast, and subsisting from fishing, pig rearing, hunting, gathering, and raising coconut plantations, the Nicobarese were reduced by a substantial number, and those surviving found themselves homeless and without an economy to support them. The fund aims to strengthen self-relying, self-organising and resilience capacities inherent in the indigenous peoples as well as to enhance disaster preparedness. IFF Social Ecology provides the chair to this Fund, and, on the basis of its long-standing research in this region, provides expert advice on the local situation.
