Beschreibung: Traffic has rapidly increased in the last years and mechanisms to control it had to be developed. The simpliest way seemed to be to place additional traffic signs for each and every purpose. The resulting information overload for drivers has led to the problem (e.g. identified with eye-tracking studies) that many signs are not noticed anymore or if noticed the viewer has to decide very fast what is more important and whether or not one should follow the displayed message. One possibility to overcome this problem is the usage of dynamic traffic displays which present the relevant information related to actual context. However, most of the displays in uses contain overwhelming information. It seems to be that they are designed following the motto: “We have 30000 coloured pixels, so we use them all”. As in other contexts, “more is less” seems to be a better solution. The Interactive Systems Research Group in cooperation with ASFINAG and Kärntner Landesregierung (Abt. 7) is developing a concept of a new “intelligent” traffic display which is based on the knowledge of different scientific disciplines, e.g. psychological aspects from perception psychology, findings from usability research in combination with new technologies of information visualization to realize the system. The system will be first used in Spittal/Drau where it shall help to regulate the at day unbalanced traffic load in the city and on the surrounding highway.
