Distributed Slot Synchronization in Radio Networks | |
Beschreibung: | Time synchronization is an essential feature of wireless networks. Existing time synchronization protocols may impose prohibitive constraints when applied to a wireless environment. Synchronization of cellular systems may be achieved by the Global Positioning System (GPS), but in an indoor environment, it may not always be possible to receive the required signals. Furthermore, for sensor networks the implementation of a GPS receiver may be prohibitive, due to constraints in cost, power consumption and/or size. The Network Time Protocol (NTP) is used to maintain clock synchronized in the Internet and other distributed systems. NTP was designed for wired networks, and is not well suited to rapid changes in the network topology. In this research activity, our goal is to develop and evaluate a completely distributed algorithm for time synchronization, which can be employed in self-organizing wireless networks (e.g., in ad hoc networks between cars or sensors). Our approach is to learn from nature: In South-East Asia, huge swarms of fireflies gather in trees and flash in perfect synchrony. A mathematical model for this interesting phenomenon was derived in the 1990s. We apply this mathematical model and adapt it to work in wireless radio environments. |
