| Beschreibung: | Social Transitions, Environmental Impacts and Policies for Sustainable Development. - Southeast Asia in Transition is an interdisciplinary research project that studies the dynamics and processes of transitions in society-nature interactions currently visible in Southeast Asian societies. The project is a joint effort of 10 partners located both in the region and in Europe. National and micro-level studies in 4 Southeast Asian countries (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines) provide an in-depth picture of the interlinkage of recent social, economic, and ecological processes. The project identifies features of sustainable development in Southeast Asian economies via an indicator-oriented analysis of the interaction between socio-economic systems and the environment. The main aim of the project is to identify and recommend effective policies to promote sustainable, environmentally sound economic and social development in Southeast Asia. A further important objective of the project is the permanent establishment of a research network beyond the termination of the project. The network aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from Southeast Asia and other world regions in order to study global environmental change and socio-economic development. Project Structure: SEA.trans includes two phases of research. In phase 1 we carried out a national survey and a local-level case-study in each of the 4 partner countries. Each partner country thus produces a detailed Country Study, which forms the basis of further analysis. In Phase 2 researchers work in groups to compare results from the Country Studies according to different analytical methods including: ·Analysis of Society''s Metabolism, Land Use, and Labor Time ·Multicriteria Analysis of environmental policy decisions ·Action-in-Context Research In carrying out the analysis, the Working Groups propose policy scenarios. These are put forward to discussion to political representatives in both Southeast Asia and Europe. The ultimate result for SEA.trans is clear-cut policy recommendations for social and ecological sustainability in the region. In addition, the project provides a thorough analysis and the documentation of on-going social and ecological transitions to policy-makers, authorities and the interested public in all of the 4 partner countries and the EU. Country Study reports for the 4 countries (Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines) are expected to be published in autumn 2002. The study will be available in English and the respective country''s official language. Intermediate results of the country Studies are available on this website as they appear. The final project report will be published in English (Autumn 2003). Its contents will include a comparative analysis of environmental indicators in the 4 countries studied plus recommendations for future policy options for the entire region. |
