PIOT - Sustainability and Foreign trade: Material and Technology Intensity of Austrian Exports
Description: The overall objective of this project is to develop a method for analysing foreign trade in terms of resource intensity and technology intensity. The background is the concept of sustainable development. In particular the hypotheses that industrial economies externalise environmental pressure by importing resource intensive products and exporting technology/know-how intensive products will be tested. Our empirical case is Austria, for comparative reasons we will also analyse a second European country (depending on the data available, probably Germany). Methodologically we will apply input output analysis. We will develop an input output model based on physical input output tables for calculating the amount of primary resources involved in the production of exports. Parallel we will apply the customary monetary input output model to the same research question. The underlying hypothesis is that input output analysis based on physical statistics is more appropriate to calculate the material resource requirements of final demand categories than the customary monetary model. From the results of the physical input output analysis we will derived improved indicators for economy wide resource use and for physical trade balances. By combining the two model we will calculate ton prizes, as an indicator to measure the technology intensity of the different sectors.
