Soziale Ökologie - Grundlagen des interdisziplinären Wissenschaftsfeldes
Description: Im Rahmen der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der "Umweltkrise" wird das Problem "nachhaltige Entwicklung" als Problem der Interaktion zwischen gesellschaftlichen und natürlichen Systemen gesehen. Dies begründet ein interdisziplinäres wissenschaftliches Arbeitsfeld Soziale Ökologie, in welchem Sozial- und Naturwissenschaften kooperieren. Das Forschungsprojekt fragt, welche Voraussetzungen die Sozialwissenschaften für eine solche interdisziplinäre Kooperation mitbringen, mit welchen Modellen die Gesellschaft-Natur Interaktion gefasst wird, wo die Grenzen sozialwissenschaftlicher Analyse gegenwärtig liegen und inwieweit diese Grenzen historisch (in der Geschichte der Disziplin) zu verorten sind. Anders formuliert, fragen wir nach der theoretisch-paradigmatischen Anknüpfungsfähigkeit des interdisziplinären Wissenschaftsfeld "Soziale Ökologie" an die Sozialwissenschaften und vice versa. Die Frage nach der Konzeption der materiellen Dimension von Gesellschaften in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftstheoretischen Ansätzen der Soziologie und der Anthropologie steht dabei im Vordergrund der Analyse. In diesem Zusammenhang bietet das Projekt einen historischen Überblick über unterschiedliche theoretische Strömungen innerhalb der Soziologie und Anthropologie vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart. Diese macht deutlich, dass Natur im Sinne der materiellen Dimension von Gesellschaften bzw. Kulturen kaum im Mainstream der theoretischen Überlegungen seitens der Soziologie reflektiert wurde und wird. In der Anthropologie hingegen finden sich einige Ansätze mit hohem Anknüpfungspotential an die Soziale Ökologie.

Social Ecology - Rooting the interdisciplinary field
Description: Within the debate about ?sustainable development?, ?environmental problems? are perceived as problems linked to the interaction between society and nature. This calls for an interdisciplinary field of research such as ?Social Ecology?, which is based upon the co-operation of natural and social science disciplines and which deals with the mutual interaction of social and natural systems. The project inquires how and to which extent social science disciplines, such as sociology, anthropology contribute to the field ?Social Ecology?. In this concern the following questions will be answered. 1) What are the potentials and limitations of current social science disciplines, concerning the theoretical concepts of the interaction between society and nature on the one hand and an interdisciplinary co-operation with the natural sciences on the other hand? 2) How do the basic theoretical concepts of the various social science disciplines, developed throughout their own history, determine the possibilities and the difficulties that arise due to the way social sciences perceive the relationship of society and nature? We reflect on various concepts of society as provided by sociology and anthropology in the 19th and 20th century. Especially the Marxist tradition within sociology and anthropology as well as specific approaches within environmental sociology and ecological anthropology contribute to a social-ecological concept of society.
